What’s more epic than one brand in a Super Bowl ad? Two brands in one ad!
PepsiCo announced that two of its brands—Doritos and Mountain Dew—will share air time during the Big Game in an epic 60-second spot. The company also released a teaser today (see below).
Not only will there be two major brands in one ad (a first for PepsiCo), the spot will also feature two popular celebrities. Actors Morgan Freeman and Peter Dinklage will star in the spot and make an appearance in the teaser.
The ad will focus not on classic Doritos or Mountain Dew products, but instead spotlight two PepsiCo product innovations—Mountain Dew Ice (a lemon-lime beverage) and Doritos Blaze (a hot and spicy version of the classic chip).
“This is a great example of the power of PepsiCo’s food and beverage portfolio coming to life for consumers on one of the world’s largest stages. Doritos and Mountain Dew go perfectly together, and both brands have passionate fan bases. We think consumers will love Doritos Blaze and MTN DEW ICE, as well as this engaging Super Bowl ad,” Al Carey, chief executive officer, PepsiCo North America, said in a statement.
Both brands are no stranger to Super Bowl advertising. Doritos ran its “Crash the Super Bowl” contest for ten years before choosing to end the competition and sit out of the game last year. Mountain Dew, you might remember, had that absurd, yet weirdly fascinating “Puppymonkeybaby” ad in 2016 for Mountain Dew Kickstart.
PepsiCo released a teaser for the 60-second spot today with Dinklage representing Doritos Blaze and Freeman on team Mountain Dew Ice. So, which side will you choose?
